The chorus has shared its joy of singing and love of music with friends and neighbors. GSCS celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. Often, proceeds from the annual concerts have been presented to area organizations. Generous volunteers in the community continue to promote the appreciation of the choral and musical arts. Music from various time periods and cultures has been sung by the chorus, including Broadway tunes, folk songs from around the world, and many classical works.

A Word from the GSCS President seth_hurd

Fall 2010

To all my fellow music lovers:

Where has the summer gone?  As the summer winds down I am again getting excited in anticipation of starting up GSCS rehearsals again.  I find myself smiling with satisfaction every time I reflect back on the concerts that we performed in June with our friends in the Rochester Choral Society from England and the First United Methodist Church Choirs.  The surprised, satisfied, and contented looks on our audiences faces when we sang the first words to Handel’s Zadok the Priest was priceless.  Ending the concert with Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in d minor, Op 48, what could have been better than that?  What a wonderful collaboration with fantastic music and great friends.  We really rocked the house!

I am also very proud of GSCS and our growing and continued efforts to share our voices and music with our local communities.  Singing at the Wentworth Home, Belamy Fields Living Facility, Strawbery Banke, and the Rochester Chamber of Commerce Holiday Event at the Rochester Opera House were great ways for GSCS to touch people in our communities who can’t make it to our concerts.  I look forward to these singing opportunities every year.

Now we need to look ahead to our next concert session…and it is going to be another great one.  We will again have a great selection of music picked out by Seth A. Hurd.  With some John Rutter, Rachmaninoff, David Willcocks, J. Michael Haydn, Randol Alan Bass and Handel, this is going to be another fantastic opportunity for singers, musicians and audiences alike.  The concert dates are scheduled for December 4th and 5th and rehearsals begin on Sunday, September 12, 2010.  Registration will begin at 3:30 pm.  Registration forms are available on our website here.  Feel free to print them off in advance and have them ready when you arrive.  Fees include membership dues of $35.00 adults $25.00 seniors, student & First-timers per concert session, the cost of music and the cost of your concert outfit. Rehearsals will be from 4:00-6:30 pm at the First Church Congregational in Rochester.

The budget for our last year was is approximately $18,000.00.  We ended the year again in the black thanks to all our fundraising efforts.  That being said, again this year we will be requiring every member to fund raise or donate $150.00 during this session.  We will be holding a wide variety of fundraisers throughout the session so you can pick and choose which ones you would like to participate in.  Please be aware that only by working together can we make this happen!  Let’s support GSCS and have another successful year!

I look forward to singing with you this year and hope that many past, current and new members will join us in sharing our gift of music with each other and our communities!!  Welcome back!

Yours in song,

Karen Manning
