After several well-received and challenging classical programs in the two and a half years we have worked together, the GSCS is switching gears and mixing it up a bit. We are really enjoying preparing our spring program: “. . . And Here’s Broadway!” The board and I have chosen a variety of selections from several Broadway hit musicals. This style of music has provided its own unique challenges for the group, such as syncopated rhythms and jazz-like harmonies. By tackling these problems, the group is expanding its musical vocabulary and developing its musicianship.

Many of our selections are medleys of hit songs from one show; such as The Lion King, Les Misérables, Wicked, and Big River. Several other selections are single hits from a show; such as “One” from A Chorus Line, “Memory” from Cats, “The Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera, the opening chorus from The Ballad of Sweeney Todd and the finale from Sunday in the Park with George. In addition we will feature the men with “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha, and the women with “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now” from Hairspray. We feel there should be something for everyone. It will truly be a “Grand Night for Singing” (our opening selection from State Fair).

History
Broadway theatre, or a Broadway show, refers to a performance, usually a play or musical, presented in one of the 39 large professional theatres with 500 seats or more located in the Theatre District of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The shows that reach Broadway and thrive there have historically been perceived as more mainstream and less cutting edge than those produced Off- and Off-Off-Broadway or in regional non-profit theatres.
Musicals on Broadway tend to have much longer runs than do "straight" (i.e. non-musical) plays. On January 9, 2006, The Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre, which debuted in 1988, became the longest running Broadway musical, with 7,486 performances, overtaking Cats.
The "Great White Way" is a nickname for the Midtown section of Broadway that encompasses the Theatre District, between 42nd and 53rd Streets. The headline "Found on the Great White Way" appeared in the February 3, 1902, edition of the New York Evening Telegram inspired by the millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements that illuminate the area.
